If Moro is the voice of spiritual wisdom in the film, Jigo the Monk is the comical voice of human opportunism. Observes Jack Fletcher: “Jigo is basically middle management. I told Miyazaki I saw him as working for a sort of Zen TRW and he nodded his head, laughing at this. That’s who Jigo is – he’s trying to work all sides and somehow come out ahead.”
